Looking a bit grim this morning but brighter higher up

20131220-070433.jpg
La Tania stuck in cloud first thing this morning and no new snow to talk about. Meteo France quoting a snow / rain limit of 1400 / 1500m today, just above resort level. Webcams higher up showing another layer of much higher cloud and descent visibility in most places but looking increasingly likely of a cloudy day with the odd snow shower rather than the hyped up, tweet fest of a decent snowfall many expected – me included. Slippery and Dave H called this one correctly – or are they just grumpy old men!

On the positive side the weather is remaining unsettled and good prospects for fresh snow next week – no dominating high pressure systems so far stopping any weather fronts coming through. Lift company quoting general 78cm snow depth on Saulire and there’s still a massive amount of decent piste skiing about – some thin bits and icy spots to be expected in exposed and heavy traffic areas especially in late afternoon.

Well worth getting up early and ripping up that corduroy those piste bashers have spent all night making…

Webcam pic from the top of Saulire this morning showing the cloud (and a bit of snow too) that La Tania is sitting in this morning.

Decent spike on the GFS Wigglies – looking good for significant snow

Dear Ski Lodge – please leave the terrace all set up, putting all the chairs and tables away will curse the snowfall…

Top lines are temperatures from several differen forecasting models (red is the average over the years). Bottom line is forecasted precipitation (no lines at all for the last couple of weeks!)

Could be some rain at first low down but not enough to worry about. Front should hit La Tania around noon Thursday. Some very unsettled weather around Christmas too – a bit far out but a cold and snowy outlook.

The queue of seasonaires…

Like rabbits in the headlights…!

The sun shines, great piste skiing & the party never stops…

Folie Douce in the sunshine. They party every day etc….. Pistes hard in places but some are still mint. Suisses still out of operation so no one going down Park City (now a red all the way replacing the black Turcs run at the top). Still limited opening but a cracking opening #LaTania week as usual.

La Tania Video Snow Report 08 Dec 2013

Tim Wall reporting on the piste basher work managing the cannoned snow on the runs down to La Tania.
All looking good for the opening of the La Tania lifts next Saturday 14 December.

Nick Ski Snow Report 7 Dec 2013 – quality

20131207-210535.jpg

The start of the season is always a bit of a trek, leave chalet 07.55 to catch the 08.15 bus from Le Praz to Courchevel 1850 for the first lift at 09:00. It makes us realise how lucky we are to ski to the door and a piste to ski out from just a short walk away from next week when La Tania opens.

A lovely sunny day and cold, cannons running all over the 3 Valleys getting a base for the season. All pistes above mid station with or without snow making seem to have a good base. Managed to find some nice untracked pitches which had plenty of snow on them. We vistited Mottaret, Les Menuires and Val Thorens getting home around 4pm.

To sum it all up we have what I would call a normal start to the season, not exceptional and not poor but as always fabulous fun.

Finally for the real low down on La Tania. Above mid station all pistes ready to go apart from the final steep part of Dou des Lanches. A little bit of a shock to see, or in this case not too see, no more Col de la Loze chair it has been removed. Plan Fontaine and Folyeres both with huge piles of snow ready to be pisted and cannons still blasting away so no reason why both should not open next week.
