The stunning weather continues for a few more days yet but looking like a change to warmer, unsettled weather towards the end of the week. Still a bit too far out of the reliable forecasting time scale but things starting to indicate some different systems coming through.

Coming Soon… Legend of Aaahhs. The old school know all about Blizzard and Plake…

The new Greg Stump Ski Movie “Legend of Aaahhs” is currently being screened in selected resorts in the US. Surely they’ll have to show it in Chamonix won’t they?

No news of DVD or Download releases yet, but one interview said it would be made available on iTunes “soon”. We’ve requested it to be show at the La Tania Cinema too (honest!).

For those that don’t remember… “Blizzard of Aaahhs” was the definitive Ski Move of the age, released in 1988 and really introducing the world to “bad boy” free skier Glen Plake. Arguably this was the start of Extreme Skiing and even the whole pop culture of Extreme Sports in general – there was life before the X-Games and Red Bull (and even snowboarding!).

Plenty of the Old School here in the 3 Valleys met Plake, some even skied on Saulire with him, those movies probably hooked some of us in for life. Plake ended up living in a Poubelle in Chamonix after Blizzard – proper Ski Bum activity before he got really famous… So if you ever hear phrases like “I’ll ski it for sure”, “look who’s in the starting gate”, “people who sue ski areas should be shot”, “note the back handspring over the cravasse” and “it’s Mr Glen Plake” – it’s down to the Blizzard of Aaahhs movie.

In the 25 years since, things have moved on incredibly, not just the HD definition and movie making technology, but the fashions, the skis, the music and of course back flips of cliffs are almost compulsory these days. The new film looks back at the making of Ski Movies with some fantastic footage – a must watch for the Old School, pure Ski Porn…
