Another Powder Day, So Another Snow Report…

More snow, Upper depth hits 100 inches. Best for 70 Years?

The official snow depth at the top of Saulire is now recorded at 100 inches (that’s over 2.5 metres). Meteo France reporting snow accumulations as good as they have been for 70 years – see below.

Even the off piste level stats are showing well over 1 metre done at 1400m (La Tania resort level).

Interesting comment on the bottom of the local Meteo France Avalanche Bulletin – we’ve got “Canada Snow”!

Which roughly translates as:

Quality of snow
Winter 2012-2013 is quite exceptional with accumulations of snow as good as they have been for 70 years.

The ski conditions are fabulous with thick powder and high quality snow (like snow of Canada).

You can ski quite easily to Bozel or Macot (bottom of the valleys in Courchevel and La Plagne).

Oh. And the return of the sun today too!

Nick Ski Powder Report 7th Feb 2013

7thFeb2013POWDER 007

One of the best days of the season as powder light and fluffy, about half a metre everywhere and it’s still snowing. Lovely tracks through the trees next Coqs piste with La Tania powder pals! Pretty cloudy with odd sunny spells. Saulire opened 11:15, Chanrossa, Creux Noire still closed. Too much fun to take photos however this is fresh tracks on Combe de Pylon about 11:30. Powder Rules Apply Today – the rules explained here…

The Powder Rules: Rule No.1 – No Friends On Powder Days. (never wait for anyone, you’ll miss those first tracks, though waiting your turn on avalanche risk slopes is allowed)

Rule No.2 – Everything Excused. (you should be allowed to be late or not turn up for work, school etc)

Note that certain girlfriend rule exceptions and/or exclusions may apply on some days.

The earliest origins of this we know of are in a 1981 US ski movie.
A Californian Ski Hire shop simply shut on Powder Days for the staff to go skiing with the sign on the door saying “CLOSED – Powder Rules Apply”.

Darkness, Snowing, Sub Zero Temperatures but the Piste Bashers continue

Caught on the webcam at 10:30pm a piste basher working hard (and there’s another shift from midnight until 7am). Perfect slopes, groomed to perfection is their aim – makes getting up for first lift always worth it even if it’s not a powder day (like tomorrow!).

Here comes the weather… Much colder & much snowier…

All the signs here for much colder weather and plenty of precipitation coming through.

Significant snow fall due with some disruption possible, also bare skin (especially on kids) needs to be covered – especially higher up with the wind chill – from later in the week.

The Wild Food Challenge 14 April 2013 – How to get involved…

www.localwildfoodchallenge.com

The wildfood challenge is an international event held in New Zealand, Finland , Martha’s Vineyard , Hawaii and now coming to The Three Valleys. On the 14th April the competition will be held at the St.Roch in Bozel.

It is run by ex La Tania resident Billy Manson . A man who lives his life in the outdoors and cooks for a living. He has brought his love of both together to form this unique competition.

Anyone can enter whether amateur or professional , young or old. You just need to make a food dish , dessert or drink from a natural ingredient that can be foraged or hunted and with a story as to how you came by it . It can be anything from a jar of Jam to a wild pig , from a simple juice to a fish dish.

It’s a fantastic way of bringing all the communities in our wonderful area together and to taste some amazing food.

Bill would like anyone who wishes to sponsor the event with prizes (anything from a bottle of wine to a holiday ) to contact him and you will have your logo placed on the publicity in the area .
Alternatively contact Sandy Jardine info@extremeskiservices.com .

There is also a documentary in the pipeline for next year so get in early as a sponsor !

The Michelin starred Chef , Julien , will be a judge as will Billy Manson who is flying from New Zealand .

This is a non profit making competition created to bring the lovers of food and drink together from all walks of life .

Thanks for taking the time to read this and feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested in sponsoring or taking part in the competition .
