Message from Katie at Hotel Telemark:

We will be holding a Charity event at the Telemark on the 3rd April 2013 to raise money for Ataxia UK and The MS Trust. It will be in Memory of Nicolas Allam my Step Brother and all the people who i treat in my life as a Physio who live with Multiple Sclerosis and Friedreich’s Ataxia, every day of their lives. Nick is a major inspiration to me and I want to try to give something back. As a start I want to hold this charity event along with a half Iron Man around the Isle of Wight in July 2013 for Ataxia and I am joining a London to Paris cycle trip in September 2013 for the MS Trust.

We will be selling tickets in advance at the Telemark or through chalets (ask your hosts, drop into the Telemark or call 0033 614 341180). These will be 15 Euros each for Food, a Drink and a Raffle ticket.

Loads of things will be happening on the day to get kids, parents and seasonnaires involved. For example, there will be a treasure hunt to find the golden eggs around La Tania, with a Giant egg prize, an auction, face painting, egg painting, cake decorating competition, a sweet stall, plenty of food and drinks and much more.

Any further ideas and donations are most welcome.

Thank you and I hope to see you all on the 3rd from 12 noon onwards.

Regards, Katie

French Law for drivers to carry breathalyser postponed indefinitely (not 1/3/13 as previous)

The law for motorists to carry a single use breathalyser has been delayed indefinitely (it was already pushed back from Nov 2012 to Mar 2013)

This from www.fleetdirectory.co.uk

A law which requires all motorists to carry a breathalyser in their vehicle at all times when driving in France has been delayed indefinitely.

Drivers in France (including motorcyclists, but not moped riders) have been encouraged to buy a single-use NF approved breathalyser for around 12 months. Anyone failing to adhere to the law would have been hit with an €11 fine from March 1.

That will no longer be the case after the French Minister of Interior decided to permanently postpone the law.

Enforcement of the law had already been pushed back once before from November 2012 due to stock shortages in certain regions.

Neil Greig, Director of Policy and Research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, was curious to how the law would effect drink driving in France.

“The law for carrying breathalysers will no longer be enforced through fines, but in order to comply with the law we still recommend that you keep a breathalyser kit in the car whenever you’re travelling to or through France,” he said.

The legal limit in France is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, lower than in the UK’s 80mg limit.

It was hoped that drivers in France would carry out a breath test on themselves before getting behind the wheel, leading to fewer accidents caused by drivers over the legal alcohol limit.

Another Successful Escapade in a Day Completed – Congratulations!

Congratulations to Reuben & Duncan who succesfully completeted the Escapade in a Day at the third attempt on 16 Feb 2013. They started at the Doron lift in Les Menuires, finishing at top of La Masse 2.

More from Reuben here:

“We started at the Doron lift in Les Menuires at about 9:05 (the lift was late opening much to our frustration) and finished at the top of Masse 2 at about 4:40. The track starts at about 8:40, as I was staying in VT and skied down to Les Menuires to meet Duncan before the lifts opened.”

“I’ve yet to go through the GPX file to pull out the exact times for each lift, but will do that so others have a set of times to work from. Having tried previously from Meribel over the new year holiday (twice), the timing seemed to work better starting in Les Menuires as we missed the busy periods for a number of lifts. For example, last time we got stuck waiting for Mont De La Chambre for at least 10 minutes. The same was true when trying to get out of Saint Martin De Belleville. With this route, we did Mont De La Chambre as our second lift and were basically on the first chair up and ended up coming out of Saint Martin De Belleville later in the day. Doing the route on a Saturday also made a very big difference, in fact I don’t think its possible mid-week if there are queues. If you lose half a minute to a minute on each chair, cumulative it puts you beyond the end of the day.”

Well done lads, you definitely went hard! Anyone else wanting to have a go? Just 35 lifts and some 51,000 feet (15,500m) of vertical and 57 miles (92km) distance. Not quite twice Everest in height then but nearly…

Video Snow Report – Sunday 24 Feb 2013

Nick Ski Snow Report Sunday 23rd Feb 2013

Where did all this snow come from? Very localised heavy snow fall hit La Tania and finished half way up the mountain with Courchevel and Saulire not getting much and La Tania getting about 15 – 30 cm depending on the height. Incredible fluffy powder on the La Tania pistes and Jean Blanc (photo). Sunshine high up so groomed pistes good however very cold. Nick www.nickskithreevalleys.co.uk

Nick Ski Snow Report Friday 22nd Feb 2013

Woke to minus 12 at the chalet so advised all to tog up warm. Beautiful sunny day and I was out for a ski on my own, no queues anywhere but I didn’t go through Meribel due to the Coupe du Monde training sessions for the races at the weekend. All groomed pistes in fantastic condition and still a few fresh tracks to be found 8 days after the last snow fall. Combe de Pylon excellent on my way home at lunchtime (work to do). At the top of Masse I did the Lac du Lou itinerary and snapped this photo of my tracks with my phone (the ones in the middle). Note that the avalanche risk is 1 out of 5 at the moment. Lac du Lou stable due to skier compaction. Nick www.nickskithreevalleys.co.uk
