Happy Bastille Day….

On 14 July 1789, militant Parisian workers storm and dismantle the Bastille, a royal fortress in Paris.
Originally constructed in the 14th century, the Bastille was first used as a state prison in the 17th century.
Although the average annual number of prisoners was only about 40, the Bastille came to symbolize the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs.
On the morning of 14 July 1789, when only seven prisoners were being held, a mob descended on the Bastille and demanded the arms and munitions stored there.
When the prison governor refused, the people stormed the fortress and freed the prisoners.
This dramatic action signalled the beginning of the French Revolution, a three-year reign of terror and political turmoil in which King Louis XVI was overthrown and roughly 1,000 people, including the king and his wife Marie Antoinette, were sent to the guillotine.
The Bastille was demolished during the Revolution.
Today, 14 July, Bastille Day, is celebrated as a national holiday in France.

Mountain Biking in the Alps…

La Tania locals Ollie and Martin ripping it up in La Clusaz on Sunday. The Three Valleys opens it’s lifts to Mountain Bikers for July and August this weekend with the “Rando Tour” of the Three Valleys competition and the down hill race from the top of the Saulire to Brides Les Bains (not for the faint hearted). Thanks to Michelle for the pics!

Summer time… When not drinking heavily in Antibes (aka La Tania-on-sea), wake boarding on Lake Annecy, Mountain Biking, putting some turns in on the Tignes glacier or endlessly eating at BBQs it’s time for those kite surfer show-offs….

ESF Welcomes British Instructors at last…

The ESF (Ecole de Ski Francais) has announced it plans to recruit 250 fully
qualified English speaking snowsports instructors for winter 2009/10, and
has the full support of BASI (British Association of Snowsports Instructors)
to do so reports www.natives.co.uk.

The move is in response to increasing demands from British clients for
native English speakers, and addresses the problems of 20 years ago for
British instructors working in French resorts.

The situation somewhat improved 10 years ago when international schools were
legally allowed to operate, but French instructors have remained fearful
that their jobs were under threat.

Andrew Lockerbie, chairman of BASI, said, “We’re looking forward to working
together to recruit British instructors to the ESF. It’s going to provide a
greater variety of instructors for clients which can only help to benefit
everyone involved. It’s an excellent opportunity for British instructors –
France is the holy grail for instructors as it’s one of the few places where
you can actually make a living from teaching, plus it shows British
instructors are now valued internationally.”

Eric Gravier, representing all 250 ESF schools and director of the ESF in
Les 2 Alpes, said, “Ideally candidates will need to have their international
diploma (ISTD), but if not they can come and finish their training with the
ESF. Regardless, we all have the same qualifications now so we should work
together for the benefit of our guests.” #fb
