3 Valleys Update For Sat 19 Dec – More Skiing Than Anyone Else

88

Update received today from S3V regarding the current conditions on the 3 Valleys Ski Area. While Tuesday night saw a little snow above 1900m with maybe 5cm on summits it was not really significant and remained too warm for snow cannons low down. A chance of a weak front from next Tuesday remains but too far out to be certain and temperatures probably too high for snow lower down – too far out to be certain at the moment.

That said, the Folyéres piste down to La Tania remains one of the best in the 3 Valleys and we’ve skied some great runs this week including Loze, Chenus, Creux & Saulire in Courchevel, Biche & Marmotte down to Méribel, Allemandes in Les Menuires, the blues down to St Martin and enjoyed many runs in Val Thorens too – it was a lot busier over there mind.

S3V Update
S3V report that the 3 Valleys are offering the most skiing in Europe with 145 pistes and 91 lifts open. More lifts and pistes will open this Saturday and Sunday.

Some webcams of other areas to show a comparison have been provided:

Serre Chevalier and Megeve

52
Mayrhofen and Selva Gardena

The ski area lift companies teams have been working extremely hard to provide quality skiing with the low amount of natural snow – a fantastic job considering the conditions and they expect more than two thirds of all pistes will be open from this weekend and over 90% of all ski lifts.

The World Cup event will go ahead – work on the Stade in Courchevel has been continuing this week. The FIS requirements have been met and Courchevel has risen to the challenge to show the international bodies they can have confidence in using Courchevel once again.

Although not 100% open, all workers are being employed from next week and all efforts will be made to have optimal conditions next week. Every piste will be monitored closely to provide the best possible skiing quality – even collecting stones by hand and moving snow around where necessary – some pictures from last year in Dec 2014 below…

Will full employment and costs being undertaken ski passes will be sold at the normal rate but there will be some expanded entertainment with resorts offering complimentary hot chocolate, mulled wine and music etc.

Off Piste Skiing and Snowboarding is not recommended and strongly discouraged. In addition customers are advised that everyone needs to adjust their speed according to conditions and traffic – respect everyone, enjoy the mountains, the fresh air and the restaurants & bars.

The Outlook: S3V remind us that the situation can change very quickly as it would only take more persistent cold weather to produce more snow or some more significant natural snowfall to open more pistes. The lift companies are fully mobilised to respond immediately to changing circumstances.
