Avalanche Safety Gear Mandatory in Italy

Italy has decided to make avalanche safety gear (avalanche beacon, shovel and probe) mandatory for all winter sports enthusiasts heading out of marked and secured ski runs. The law will also apply to off piste skiers.

From the excellent off piste skiing site Pistehors.com – more here

Can’t see it happening in France – although we have seen the Pisteurs checking transceivers at the top of the Chanrossa chair before people head off piste this season, not sure if they actually stopped you if you weren’t properly equipped though.

  1. This is such a sensible way for Ski stations to go. I have noticed that there are more and more Ortovox boxes in Chamonix this season where you can stand next to one and check the strength of your tranciever beacon.

  2. Smacks of a Nanny state to me, people should be educated, be responsible and held account for their own actions… No doubt helmets compulsory soon, then body armour and michelin man suits… etc etc. Imagine being arrested crossing between pistes cos you’re not carrying a shovel…
